Abstract

HTS tapes assembled in a compact stack are one of the most common methods for increasing the critical current of a single superconducting current-carrying element. Stacks are also used as sub-elements for larger superconductors. However, a stack of HTS tapes is a set of parallel-connected conductors with zero resistance. The current distribution among the tapes in the stack and its current-voltage characteristic can be complex depending on the number of tapes in the stack, the current rising rate, and other factors. This, in turn, can lead to additional heat generation in the superconductor, for example, due to the appearance of resistive conductivity in their voltage — current characteristic, which, in turn, will lead to a decrease in the critical current of the stack or the larger superconductor. This paper presents the first results of an experimental study of the current-voltage characteristics of tape stacks soldered with indium-tin solder, with different stack sizes and current rising rates. Sufficient decay of the critical current per tape was observed with increase of number of tapes. The measurement results are discussed, and measured current decay was compared with calculations by FEM model. The calculated results are well coincided with the experiment.
