Abstract
Our everyday life is unthinkable without various electronic gadgets, household equipment and modern city infrastructure. All of these are the result of past scientific and engineering ideas and developments. The technical level of a country also directly defines how competitive, independent, and stable its economy is. Therefore, China invests significant resources in research and development (R&D). A strong academic system capable of preparing talents for modern industry and leading new research directions is essential for the success of an R&D strategy. This article introduces China’s academic and research system, focusing on its existing infrastructure and development strategy. Many new universities and research institutes are emerging to boost the technical development of China. In this context, we introduce the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI), established to become a global leader in large-scale basic research including astrophysics, particle and condensed matter physics.
Keywords: Chinese academic system; TDLI institute; superconductivity; particle physics; astrophysics.
